What is Coaching?

Coaching is

  • a thinking partnership; a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the maximisation of personal and professional potential.

Coaches work with clients who

  • want to look to the future
  • wish to develop and change
  • seek focus & clarity
  • find goal setting and action plans helpful.

Please contact a counsellor if you

  • seek to understand the origin of personal issues,
  • wish to explore fundamental problems with the self & relationships
  • require coping mechanisms in life
  • need help identifying underlying mental health or other related issues
  • prefer long-term support.

Transformation is a process of change

The pathways in our brains can get stuck
into certain ways of thinking.
On our own, it can become difficult to change our beliefs
about ourselves and the world around us.
TRANSFORMATION
occurs  when we understand more about
what is going on below the surface,
gain new insights, adjust our habits
and then
change direction.

Something about
neuroscience & coaching

The brain

The mammalian or social brain stores long term memory;  the stories of our lives.

It is also responsible for our emotions and creativity.

The cortical or thinking brain holds our short-term memories and is responsible for fact-based learning and analytical thinking.

The reptilian or primitive brain triggers the "fright-fight-flight response" and controls our motor skills.

Our stories

Deeply embedded life stories are resistant to change.

Information doesn't often change behaviour.

Fear-based learning experiences block change.

Stories are held together by beliefs about the present and assumptions about the future.

They are related to our sense of identity, and  view of reality.

Learning

Active learning occurs when what we are told supports what we believe and we have the confidence to act.

Transformational learning comes when the protective barrier breaks down and new awareness is created.

Change

A coach acts as a sounding board when we need to talk things through, untangle thoughts and identify options

Often, the coaching conversation goes further, enabling us to climb a tree in our minds, get a new perspective, see connections in our thinking and identify what is holding us back in order to move forward.
